Friends angered by the robbery of $6 from a Bowling Green couple chased down the accused assailant and beat him. City police found Gary W. Cardwell of Bowling Green around 3 a.m. Sunday lying in the 1300 block of Adams Street, bleeding from the mouth and from a small cut to his head, according to a city police report. Police said Cardwell had been chased by four Western students three of whom caught him. One of the students, Marc E. Kessler Jr. of Bowling Green, told the Daily News they beat the man after he tried to put up a fight. Cardwell was lodged in Warren County Regional Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond. He faces charges of first-degree robbery, possession of a controlled substance, promoting contraband and possession of drug paraphernalia, the report said. Kessler and three friends Bowling Green residents Kyle Wise, Steven Moody and Josh Turner were leaving the area and headed toward a parked car when they heard a friend shout for help and say he had just been robbed, Kessler said. A man brandished what appeared to be a gun but turned out to be a flashlight in the darkness and ran, he said. The chase was on. The man fell at least twice during the chase and briefly evaded the students before he was found crouching near a bush, Kessler said. He again tried to run from the students but fell and failed in his attempts to fight the three men, Kessler said. He took off running, and we chased him down and caught him, Kessler said. He tried to put up a fight. Im not going to lie, we hit him. But thats because he was fighting us, too. I wouldnt say we beat him to death or nothing, but we took the weapon away from him and made sure he was caught. John Crowe, 18, and Whitney Simpson, 19, both of Bowling Green, told police they were sitting inside a parked car talking when a man entered the vehicles back seat and brandished what appeared to be a gun, according to a city police report. Neither Crowe nor Simpson was hurt during the robbery. The couple said they gave the robber all of the cash they had $6, the report said. The robber then told the couple to drive, but the two refused, police said. A second man who appeared to be with the robber waited outside the car and later was interviewed by police, the report said. Cardwell told police that he insinuated he had a gun during a confrontation with Simpson behind Adams Street Apartments, but he denied robbing the couple. He told police the couple were his brother and sister and the argument stemmed from a drug dispute, according to the police report. Police havent charged the second man or the students with any crime. Police said they transported Cardwell to jail, where a search turned up a pipe, believed to be used to smoke crack cocaine, and a plastic bag containing residue believed to be crack.
