Since “Avengers: End Game,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a bit of a slog.

Sure there have been some bright spots, but overall the latest phase has failed to match the creative heights the MCU enjoyed for nearly a decade.

“Thunderbolts” is a return to those heights – a highly entertaining action film that gets its emotional kick from a strong cast (headlined by Florence Pugh) and a story that is grounded in reality.

The film finds Yelena (Pugh), the Russian assassin who was part of the Black Widow program, stuck in a mental rut and looking to finally get out of the hired assassin business.

She is given one final assignment by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), but the assignment turns out to be a trick with the CIA director looking to eliminate her covert program and the assassins that can link her to wrongdoings.

This forces Yelena to team up with the other assassins – John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) – to expose de Fontaine with a little help from Winter Soldier turned Senator Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).

Further complicating things is a guy named Bob (Lewis Pullman) – a mystery party crasher who may bring more to the table than anyone, including Bob, realizes.

The rag tag bunch of mercenaries leads to some fun moments – with the script full of witty banner that this talented cast is able to really sink their teeth into.

Director Jake Schreier brings a human element to it all. Sure, there are fight sequences (that are well staged and visually appealing), but this is a film as much about the mental well-being of its characters as it is keeping them out of physical harm.

The supporting cast, which includes David Harbour as Yelena’s boisterous father who was once known as the Red Guardian, all shine – giving intimate moments that you don’t often see in a Marvel film.

But it’s Pugh that ultimately makes it all work – effectively capturing Yelena’s mental anguish (something which plays heavily into a creative final act). Pugh brings a relatable nature to her character that really provides the heart and soul of the film.

This is a nice step forward for the MCU (with a pretty fun post credit scene), a welcome advancement after spending the last few years spinning its wheels.

For the first time in a while there is a reason to look forward to the next Marvel adventure.

You have to hand it to Nicolas Cage.

At this point in his lengthy career the 61-year old Academy Award winning actor has opted to find the craziest, most bizarre projects imaginable.

That is definitely the case with his latest film “The Surfer.” This is Cage at his most unhinged, playing a man pushed to edge amidst a beautiful sun-drenched, technicolor canvas.

It’s a film with style and flair, with Cage going full Nic Cage. It may not have much else to offer, but that proves to be enough to satisfy anyone craving a B-movie mind scramble.

Cage plays a character simply known as the Surfer, who as the film begins has brought his son (Finn Little) to his childhood stomping ground – specifically a Luna Bay beach he frequently surfed as a kid.

The Surfer is in the process of trying to buy his childhood home that features a perfect view of the beach – it’s a transaction that he is hopeful will patch up the relationship with his estranged wife and his son.

But his idealistic afternoon quickly takes a dark turn when a surfer gang led by Scally (Julian McMahon) refuses to let the father and son surf – with the standoff ending in violence.

The son leaves, but the Surfer is determined to get revenge – a quest that just pushes him further and further over the edge.

“The Surfer” basically unfolds in the parking lot overlooking the beach with director Lorcan Finnegan staging a series of events that test the main character’s sanity – and the audience’s patience.

It all grows more and more uncomfortable to watch, but Cage is so willing to go all the way with the insanity that it manages to hold together – even when Thomas Martin’s screenplay starts sputtering and spinning in circles.

To Martin’s credit the screenplay does do an effective job at tackling the theme of toxic masculinity and the way it can just fester even in the best of people.

Cage helps to drive that message home, especially in a final act that may not end on the highest of notes – but still manages to stick the landing. That is pretty impressive considering the emotional high wire act the whole experience is.

I’m not sure “The Surfer” could have worked with anyone else, so it’s a good thing Cage is willing to do whatever it takes – pushing what could have been a cinematic disaster into mildly entertaining territory.

If You Go

Rating: R for language, suicide, some violence, drug content and sexual material

“The Accountant” was a moderate box office success when it was released in theaters in the fall of 2016, yet no one seemed to be clamoring for another chapter.

Yet here we are with “The Accountant 2,” which is a slight improvement on the original, yet still suffers from many of the same things as the original, including some wild shifts in tone that makes the film feel like two movies fighting each other for supremacy.

This chapter finds Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), the autistic accountant who served as a money launderer in the original, now living in seclusion.

When former FBI agent Raymond King (J.K. Simmons in a glorified cameo) is murdered, he leaves a message for his former co-worker Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to find Wolff to help solve two mysteries – the disappearance of an immigrant that King was trying to find and the people responsible for his death. Both may be connected with a mysterious hit woman (Daniella Pineda) – perhaps being the key to both.

Medina enlists Wolff, who enlists his estranged hit-man brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal).

The interaction between the brothers works for the most part, with Affleck’s monotone delivery playing well off Bernthal’s hot-headed killer. Their chemistry really feels like the better end of a buddy cop comedy with their partnership fun for the most part.

The problem lies with the second half, when the disappearance that drives the film comes to light. The plight of the migrant worker has some real-life present-time vibes that just don’t mesh with the same tone of the odd couple brothers.

The final act features some peril that gets eerily close to going too far, with the tone much darker than what has proceeded it.

To be fair, both films, the buddy comedy and the plight of a migrant worker, have separate strengths. The problem is when meshed together, it doesn’t work, unable to find a way to effectively piece these two stories together.

If “The Accountant 2” had decided to pick one specific lane and focused its attention in that direction, this really could have worked. As it is, it’s just the second time in this series where a potentially good film is buried in a murky final product.

Junior Achievement of South Central Kentucky, in partnership with the Educational Opportunity Centers at Western Kentucky University, will host an inaugural J.A. Girls International event April 29.

Thirty international students from Warren Central High School will join the event designed to empower, mentor and inspire these young women.

The mission of J.A. Girls International is to prepare young women for economic success by providing hands-on experiences and educational opportunities that honor, value, and celebrate the female perspective, experiences and unique development.

The curriculum will provide practical information about preparing for the working world as they prepare to navigate life beyond high school.

Students will learn how to network, reflect on positive daily practices to navigate difficult situations, learn about the college-bound process, discuss the process to enter the workforce and identify additional resources available in the community to assist with these processes.

The J.A. Girls philosophy was specifically designed to complement Junior Achievement’s approach of allowing volunteers from the community to deliver proven curricula that focuses on entrepreneurship, workforce preparation and financial literacy through experiential hands-on programs.

There have been plenty of war movies, but you can argue there really has never been one like “Warfare.”

Co-directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza have crafted an immersive deep-in-the-trenches recreation of a battle Mendoza was a part of during the Iraq War. It’s an experience that is both mundane and suspenseful, effectively capturing the chaos of a dog fight in real time.

“Warfare” takes place in 2006 with a Navy SEAL team on a seemingly routine mission occupying a local home. The occupation quickly turns into a fight for survival when the team is pinned inside, suffering mass casualties in the process.

Garland and Mendoza keep this rather simple, providing just the bare bones of narrative. We do get to know some of the team – Eric (Will Poulter) is the leader, Elliott (Cosmo Jarvis) a sniper and a film version of Mendoza (D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai) among the group. The filmmakers, who also co-wrote the script, choose to let you know very little about these men other than their bond on the battlefield and the stress, and danger, they endure on a daily basis.

Even without having much background on the characters, there is still a connection with the audience – white knuckle moments in the tightly packed 95 minute run time where we truly care about the plight of these men. The film feels less like a film and more like a camera crew given access in capturing these men in one of the darkest moments of their military careers.

“Warfare” has a lot in common with “Hurt Locker” and “Black Hawk Down” in finding a compelling way to tell this story and really bring a sense of authenticity that only adds to the tension.

It’s interesting that this is the follow-up to Garland’s “Civil War” which came out last year. That was a film where not really taking a side limited the impact. In “Warfare” opting to just let this unfold from the perspective of one side in the battle, and leaving the enemy as nameless practically faceless antagonists actually works way better than one might think.

This isn’t a film about political agendas or soap box moments. “Warfare” is about showing how war is truly hell and celebrating the men who are willing to put their lives in danger to protect their country.

If you go

Starring: D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter

Ryan Coogler just keeps reshaping film-making.

Having already re-invented the super hero movie with “Black Panther” (still the best Marvel film to date) and the boxing/ sports film with “Creed,” the 38-year old filmmaker takes aim at the vampire genre in his latest film “Sinners.”

It is a breathtaking cinematic experience, one where Coogler uses everything at his disposal to create an immersive experience full of rich characters and impeccable craftsmanship.

“Sinners” will almost certainly be one of the films we look back on in December as among the best of 2025.

“Sinners” takes place in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta with brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) returning home after fighting in World War I and then moving to Chicago where they worked for Al Capone.

Loaded with cash, imported beer and whiskey, the brothers purchase a saw mill that they plan to turn into a juke joint. With help from a handful of people from their past, including an alcoholic musician named Delta (Delroy Lindo), Smoke’s former lover Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) who dabbles in Bayou witchcraft, and their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton) a preacher’s son who has a gift for playing the blues, they get the juke joint ready for the grand opening.

Opening night takes a deadly turn when three strangers show up, led by an Irish vampire named Remmick (Jack O’Connell).

Coogler’s screenplay is more than just ordinary people fighting vampires, much more. While the horror plot serves as the story’s main catalyst this is a film with a lot on intriguing subtext, tackling race, class and the struggle for power.

The script also fleshes out these characters in such detail that it adds more suspense to their plight in the final act, with the audience emotionally invested in these characters way more than you generally see in this genre.

Jordan does tremendous work in both roles, the kind of performances that are easy to overlook because they seem so effortless. The supporting cast, which also includes Hailee Steinfeld, is just as good, helping to make these characters more relatable to the audience.

“Sinners” is a film full of humor, scares and impeccable craftsmanship, with everything from the set design to the pulsating score top level. Coogler’s use of music, particularly in two exhilarating extended sequences, only expands the lore that his story is creating. This is a film that embraces the supernatural but then grounds it in such a realistic environment that it doesn’t feel out of place.

If there is anything to quibble about it might be that Coogler is perhaps a little too ambitious, with “Sinners” aiming for so many things that it is slightly overstuffed.

But I’m never gonna fault a filmmaker willing to swing for the fences, especially when the result is this astounding. This is a vampire movie unlike any you have ever seen – one that raises the bar for anyone who dares to work in this genre again.

If You Go
“Sinners”
Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld

Rating: R for strong bloody violence, sexual content and language
