FRANKLIN Franklin-Simpson High Schools football team is in the proverbial drivers seat. A week after knocking off Bowling Green the preseason favorite in Class 3-A, Region I, District II the Wildcats took sole possession of first place in the district Friday with a 26-20 win over visiting Owensboro. Franklin-Simpson, ranked No. 3 in Class 3-A, improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the district, leaving the Wildcats as the only undefeated team in district play. No. 2 Owensboro dropped to 6-1 and 2-1.Coming into the season everybody was shooting at Bowling Green and Owensboro as the district favorites, Franklin-Simpson coach Tim Schlosser said. Now weve beaten both of them. Were not going to overlook anybody, but Id definitely say this puts us in the drivers seat for the district. And if Friday is any indication, Wildcat quarterback Jami DeBerry is ready to resume the driving. After separating his shoulder in a loss at Portland (Tenn.) on Sept. 10, DeBerry returned to action Friday to lead the Wildcat offense. For the game, DeBerry completed 18-of-28 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns and led two clutch second-half drives after Owensboro took an early third-quarter lead. I dont know if you call it determination or what, DeBerry said. Our line just played outstanding all night. But after a 14-14 first half, it was Owensboro that looked outstanding on the first play of the third quarter. Held to just 23 yards in the first half, Owensboro tailback Getty Cavitt took a handoff and outran Franklins Josh Flippin to the end zone for an 88-yard touchdown run and a 20-14 Red Devil lead. After the teams traded punts and turnovers more much of the third quarter, the Wildcats finally pulled even late in the quarter. DeBerry, who completed 10-of-13 passes in the second half, completed four straight on a scoring drive that tied the game. The fourth of those came on a 10-yard slant to Solomon Parker, who bulled in to make it 20-all with 38 seconds left in the third. Jami just hit me and I did what I had to do to get in, Parker said. Parker set up the winning score with an interception of a Cody Holder pass with 6:03 left in the game. The pickoff gave Franklin the ball at the Owensboro 36-yard line. A key third-down catch by Timmie Latham kept the drive alive, and DeBerry ran the final 9 yards to give the Wildcats their 26-20 edge with 3:05 to go. Coach Schlosser had kind of told me to take it easy with my shoulder and all, DeBerry said. But on that play I had to score. He kind of game me a look as I came off the field, but he told me, I know what you were doing. Darius Williams intercepted a halfback pass by Justin Miller with 1:16 remaining to end one last Red Devil drive. Cavitt blocked a punt to give Owensboro a final chance in the last minute, but the Red Devils failed to move the ball. We had a huge win last week against Bowling Green, and to be able to come back and get this one was a big win for us, Schlosser said. Franklin opened the scoring early in the first quarter when Key got a bruising block from Marcus Sherrill and returned a punt 51 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. I just got a good block and turned on a little bit of speed there at the end, Key said. Tyler Boo Smiths 57-yard run and Logan Johnsons extra-point kick gave the Red Devils a 7-6 edge at the 2:50 mark of the first quarter. This game does sort of measure what youve got, Owensboro coach Gordon Powers said. I think we played to win tonight. What makes all the difference in the world is your mindset. DeBerry got his first touchdown pass late in the first quarter, hooking up with Key for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds to go. DeBerrys two-point run made it 14-7. But Owensboro answered right back with a 17-play drive that Cavitt capped with a 2-yard plunge. Johnsons extra-point kick tied the game at 14 at halftime. Cavitt led Owensboros 300-yard rushing attack with 137 yards on 20 carries. Smith added 101 yards on 10 attempts. Franklin-Simpson takes next week off before hosting Warren East on Oct. 15.
