It was a rough day at the office for the Bowling Green Hot Rods, who dropped the series finale to Greensboro 13-10 on Sunday.

Greensboro seized the momentum from the opening pitch and survived a late push from BG to make it back-to-back wins against Bowling Green (17-16). The Hot Rods surrendered the most runs this season since a 14-2 setback to Hudson Valley back on April 6.

The Grasshoppers wasted little time off BG starter Yoniel Curet – loading the bases with a single and two hit batters. Mitch Jebb got Greensboro (18-14) on the board with a two-run single and Maikol Escotto followed with a three-run homer down the left-field line to make the score 5-0.

An RBI single by Charles McAdoo added to the lead in the second, with the Hot Rods cutting the deficit to 6-2 on Xavier Issac’s two-run shot to right center – his team-leading sixth of the season.

Greensboro regained the momentum right back in the top of the fourth, loading the bases for the third time in four innings and chasing Curet. McAdoo greeted reliever Jonny Cuevas with a bases-clearing three-run double to push the advantage to 9-2.

Shawn Ross led off the fifth with a solo shot to left to extend the Greensboro lead before Brayden Taylor responded with a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right – his third of the season – to make the score 10-4.

The Grasshoppers struck again the next half inning, plating three in the sixth that included a homer from McAdoo.

Bowling Green tried to rally again in the eighth with a four-run outburst that included a two-run single by Brock Jones and an RBI single from Chandler Simpson.

Kamren James homered in the ninth to pull a little closer, but the Hot Rods were unable to complete the comeback.

Curet took the loss in his second start against Greensboro in this season. The right-hander allowed nine runs – all earned – in 3 1/3 innings of work to drop to 1-4 on the season. Curet allowed six earned runs total in his previous six starts this season and hadn’t allowed an earned run in his last two starts prior to Sunday.

Colton Ledbetter had three hits to lead the way for the Hot Rods. Simpson, Isaac and James finished with two hits each for the Hot Rods, with Isaac scoring a pair of runs.

SERIES RECAPDespite Sunday’s loss, the Hot Rods claimed the series by winning four out of six games against the Grasshoppers. Bowling Green won the first four games, including two walk-off winners.

Greensboro also had a win in its final at-bat, a 6-4, 11-inning victory on Saturday.

Bowling Green is 9-6 at BG Ballpark this season, going 2-1 in three home series. The lone series loss came to open the season, when the Hot Rods lost two out of three to Hudson Valley.

UP NEXTThe homestand continues as the Hot Rods welcome the Brooklyn Cyclones for a six-game series, with game one scheduled for 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday.

It will be Brooklyn’s first visit to Bowling Green Ballpark and only the second ever meeting against the Hot Rods. The two teams played a six-games series in Brooklyn in 2022, with the teams splitting the series 3-3.

The Cyclones, a New York Mets affiliate, entered play Sunday 18-14 – one game back of the lead in the South Atlantic North Division.

Neither team has announced a starter for Tuesday’s series opener.
