Mammoth Cave National Park may be getting more mammoth.

A bill to expand the park boundaries by more than 500 acres was introduced in Congress last week.

The Mammoth Cave National Park Boundary Adjustment Act would give the Secretary of the Interior the ability to acquire an additional 551.14 acres of land currently owned by the Nature Conservancy.

The Nature Conservancy is a global environmental nonprofit. No details, such as the cost of the land, is detailed in the act.

This newly acquired land would enhance protections in the Green River watershed, further conserving the area’s wildlife and cultural heritage while generating additional tourism to Kentucky’s Second District, according to a news release from Rep. Brett Guthrie and Sen. Mitch McConnell.

The additional property includes cave passages, including Coach and James Caves, which hold prehistoric and historic artifacts, and the expansion would allow the park to manage land in Edmonson and Barren counties.

Sandra Wilson, executive director of Horse Cave/Hart County Tourism, said that tourism income has been a part of the economies of the Mammoth Cave gateway communities for over 200 years.

“Because we are located in a sensitive karst terrain area, the Green River watershed has a critical impact on our communities, as well,” she said.

“Every year, Mammoth Cave National Park draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and contributes nearly $90 million to our local economy,” Guthrie said in the news release. “This natural wonder has inspired people for thousands of years, playing a foundational role in the culture of our region. I am proud to introduce the Mammoth Cave National Park Boundary Adjustment Act to expand protections for the cave system’s important biodiversity and rich history, ensuring that it can be studied, maintained and enjoyed by future generations of Americans.”

“Kentucky is lucky to be home to an abundance of natural treasures, among them, Mammoth Cave National Park. This extensive cave network has been inspiring Kentuckians and drawing visitors from all corners of the globe for generations. Beyond its role in driving tourism to our commonwealth, the park also plays a crucial role in the region’s economic growth, supporting good jobs for the people of Kentucky,” McConnell said in the news release.

“I’m proud to partner with Congressman Guthrie on this important initiative once again which will expand the critical habitats that the National Park Service protects and preserves in the park.”

BOWLING GREEN – Glendon Irl Arnold, age 71 passed on May 7, 2025 in Bowling Green, Ky as an Army Veteran. He was born on April 11, 1954 in Beaver Dam, son of Darrel Arnold and Bettye (Richardson) Arnold.

Survivors include a daughter, Katie Ballard (Aaron), and granddaughters Averie and Mia Ballard, Union, KY. His family circle included brothers Perry Arnold (Stephanie), Kelly Arnold (Kristy), and sisters Jackie Wisdom (Larry) and Charlene Creager (Mitch) and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darrel and

Bettye Arnold, a sister, Ramona Arnold and a nephew Joseph Glen Baize.

Glen had a zeal for life and a sensitivity rarely shown by men, despite a (mostly) playful stubborn exterior. He enjoyed spending time with family, learning from his elders, and loved those who called him “Deeda” most of all. True to being a carpenter and craftsman, Glen embraced physical activity and the great outdoors. He made the most out of the little things and didn’t want for much. “It helps to help,” as he always said, andhe helped those around him feel loved.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. A special thank you to the Hospice of Southern Kentucky for his excellent care. The family requests donations to Hospice of Southern Kentucky, 5872 Scottsville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42104 (hospicesoky.org) in lieu of flowers.

I know most people have heard about the new proposed budget for 2026. This budget will hurt almost everyone except for the rich. If you are poor, middle class, retired, or still working, it will affect you.

Our president spouts phrases like fiscal responsibility while he destroys all the programs most people rely on. For example, cuts are proposed to education, healthcare, preschool programs and the LIHEAP (low-income heating assistance program).

Also, no money will go to FEMA, so you better pray for good weather. There won’t be any money for disasters like flooding and tornadoes. All the while, they want tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. The president wants a trillion-dollar military budget and here’s the rub of salt in your wounds that this budget will cause, he wants $300 million for his golf trips. So, while you are paying more for your neccesities, you can pay for him to play golf.

PLEASE contact your congressmen and your senators, tell them their job is to work for you and your vote, not the president. Everyone must make their voices heard. No matter who you voted for, Republican, Democrat or Independent, we are all in this together. Your party won’t pay your rent, put food on your table, gas in your car, or help with medical bills when your child is sick. For those who think the $300 million for golf trips is fake news, go on your laptop’s search engine and enter “Pay for Trump’s golf trips.”

It’s informative. So, contact your congressmen and your senators today.

Make your voice heard.

“Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”

This is the classic question asked of Senator Joe McCarthy, the pompous demagogue of the 1950’s by Joseph Welch, a lawyer in the Army-McCarthy hearings.

I can think of no better words to ask the most pompous demagogue of our age, Donald J. Trump, who says that the J stands for “Genius.” Having pronounced himself the greatest U.S. president of all time, and “the leader of the world,” he has now posted an AI-generated photo of himself as the next pope on Truth Social and X.

This is the same man who refused to sing any hymns or say or read the Apostle’s Creed at the funeral of George H.W. Bush. He looked like he was bored out of his mind, and now he dares to fancy himself as the next pope? “Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?
