Patience key to Titans’ ground game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Eddie George knows how the Tennessee Titans can fix their problems running the ball: stay patient. The Titans (3-1) rank ahead of only the expansion Cleveland Browns in rushing the ball and are averaging just 69.3 yards a game, down from last season when they ranked ninth with 123 yards. George, a two-time Pro Bowler, has not topped 100 yards rushing in 11 straight games and is averaging 2.9 yards a carry. But George said the Titans started just as slowly last season and ranked just as poorly before finally working the kinks out in October and November. We just stuck with it, he said Monday. Whether it was a 1-yard loss or a 10-yard gain. We just stayed with the running game and we finally started clicking. I am confident one of these days were going to get it going. The Titans (3-1) didnt have it going Sunday in their first loss of the season to San Francisco. They had a chance to tie the game when Neil ODonnell hit Yancey Thigpen with a 32-yard touchdown pass to pull Tennessee within 24-22 with 1:48 to go. The Titans lined up for the two-point conversion, and ODonnell pitched the ball out to George, who had only 26 yards on 15 carries, for a sweep right. But linebacker Lee Woodall stopped him short, and the 49ers held on for the victory. Coach Jeff Fisher defended the decision. There were a lot of things we couldve done. This one, we thought, gave us the best chance, and it didnt work. Give them credit for making the play, Fisher said. He said the Titans hold out two or three plays a game for two-point conversions and can choose among them depending on how the game has gone. The Titans decided to run after calling seven pass plays on their previous three goal line drives. Fisher noted Woodall was blitzing when he stopped George, indicating the defense was expecting a pass. Fisher said the Titans shouldnt have let themselves get into a position where they needed a two-point conversion just to tie. They blew a 10-0 lead, and settled for three field goals after having first-and-goal three times inside the 11.There also was an interception by ODonnell, a long punt return that set up San Franciscos second TD and a 53-yard run that set up the 49ers final touchdown. We should have won this ball game and didnt. You have to go on, Fisher said. Theres no need to panic right now. Weve won three games and are off to the best start in several years. Still, there is concern about the running game, which has been the most consistent part of the teams offense in recent years. The offensive line features two new guards in Benji Olson and Scott Sanderson, replaced Sunday by Jason Layman due to injury, with veteran Bruce Matthews back at center. Weve had worse days rushing. We just have to find a rhythm once again as far as the running game is concerned, George said. The team is fifth-best in passing yardage, averaging 293 yards a game, and Fisher is confident the running game will improve. Itll come. Eddies not frustrated. Hes disappointed. Eddie right now is second in the AFC in all-purpose yards and at the running back position fourth overall. He had 100 yards (actually 106 total yards) for us yesterday and we just didnt hand him the ball, Fisher said.
