Gay people not asking for extra rights

I have taken the time each day this week to read various comments submitted to the Daily News regarding the issue of passing a gay rights ordinance Bowling Green. My overall reaction is great disappointment to see so many Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous people against passing an ordinance to offer gay and lesbian members of our community protection. In my opinion, the gay community is only requesting the same rights that heterosexual citizens of Bowling Green are granted, and this is certainly not in any way a special kind of right. I have read such negative comments as God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve and people can change their sexual preferences, but they cannot change their race or color. First of all, I do not understand why so many people feel that they have to use God to justify their feelings. To those people I ask, why cant you just stand firm as yourselves and state what you believe is right or fair without standing behind God? Furthermore, who in their right minds would choose to be gay in this day and age knowing that the world in which we live is so consumed with hate and violence and that by making such a choice, they may as well paint a bulls eye on their forehead. Ignorance is such a factor in the negative response to passing this ordinance. Rather than judging the gay community so harshly, we each should take the time to evaluate ourselves to see what rights we are truly worthy of. After all, arent all rights special? I think so. When I turned 18 years old, my country gave me the right to vote, isnt that special? I am a proud advocate of gay rights in Bowling Green.
