Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team beat Dayton 5-2 on Saturday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
The Lady Toppers moved to 11-6 overall this season and 9-5 at home with the win over the Flyers (7-8).
“Good win over a good Dayton team,” WKU coach Greg Davis said in a news release. “Last year was very close and this was a close match. The difference was that we came out and were really dominant in doubles. I’d say the Jacksonville State match and today were the two best doubles efforts of the season, so that was good to see.
“We have an opportunity ahead next week. We’ve got UT Southern coming in here on Monday and then we’re playing UTEP on the road. It’ll be a very challenging conference match with a program that we have great respect for. We’ll be flying down there on Tuesday and playing them on Wednesday. Two big opportunities in the week ahead of us and we’re looking forward to both challenges.”
Saturday’s match was the ninth in a 10-match homestand for the Lady Toppers. WKU has gone 6-3 during the homestand, with wins over Missouri State, Eastern Illinois, Jax State, Southern Indiana, Tennessee State and Dayton. WKU’s nine home wins are the third-most in a single season in program history. The Lady Toppers won 12 home matches in 2022 and 11 in 2024.
The Lady Toppers are now 6-0 all-time against Dayton. Saturday’s match was the first between the two programs in Bowling Green.
WKU has won the doubles point in 12 of its 17 matches. WKU is 9-3 this season when winning the doubles point.
Emily Schut and Mia Miranda improved to 11-3 together in doubles this season, including a 7-2 record at No. 1 doubles. Saturday’s doubles win over Dayton was the third straight win for the duo.
Sofia Blanco and Rachel Hermanova are now 10-6 together in doubles this season and have won their last three matches together.
Blanco has 48 career doubles wins, which ranks second in program history behind the 56 doubles wins from Samantha Martinez.
Hermanova now has 26 career doubles wins, which is tied for ninth-most all-time in Lady Topper Tennis history.
“I think we were really decisive, aggressive and we just knew what we were going to do from the beginning,” Hermanova said. “Obviously, it was huge for the match because winning doubles always helps you with the one point and you never know when you’re going to need it.”
Hermanova improved to 10-5 in singles this season, all from the No. 1 position. Her win extended her program record for singles wins to 59.
Blanco is now 11-4 in singles this season. Her win over Dayton was the 51st of her career, which ranks second in program history.
Blanco now has 99 combined singles and doubles wins, which are most in program history.
Hermanova now has 85 combined singles and doubles wins, which ranks second in program history.
Sunskrithi Damera improved to 9-5 in singles with her win Saturday. She now has 29 career singles wins, which is 10th-most in program history.
Schut is now 11-2 in singles this season, with a 6-1 record at No. 6 singles and a 5-1 record at No. 5 singles.
“I felt really confident today on the court,” Schut said. “I was playing pretty good. I was playing aggressive. I felt like I could make my shots, so I think it went pretty good. I just felt really confident and I played really aggressive today. I think that’s the key.”
The Lady Toppers are scheduled to wrap up a 10-match homestand with a 1 p.m. match against UT Southern on Monday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
