Greenwood High School squandered a 12-point second half lead, but held on to defeat homestanding Bowling Green 58-56 Tuesday. Greenwoods Tiffany Evans came off the bench to scored a game-high 21 points. She made some big baskets and shes been very consistent off the bench, Greenwood basketball coach Greg Dunn said of the sophomore post player. Weve been bringing Tiff of the bench and shes been producing. Shes able to muscle it up inside. The Lady Gators held a 46-34 lead late in the third period before Bowling Green went on a 13-3 run. Shalana Beasleys free throws cut the Lady Gators lead to 49-47 with 3:55 left in the contest. Bowling Green then shaved the deficit to 51-50 on Jovion Embrees bucket just inside the 3-point arc. Greenwood went up 54-50 on Evans field goal, but Bowling Green stormed back in the final minute. Kelly Frericks fouled out as Royanne Beard drew a block on the Lady Gators senior post player. Beards free throws cut Greenwoods lead to 58-56 with 15 seconds left in the game. Greenwood turned it over on the ensuing inbound pass and the clocked stopped with four seconds left on a held ball. Bowling Green inbounded to Amy Chapa who kicked out to Beard from beyond the arc, but the juniors game-winning shot rimmed out. They ran a good out-of-bounds sideline play and it would have won the game, Dunn said. Luckily for us, it didnt go in. Greenwood held Beard, Bowling Greens leading scorer, to zero points in the first half. Shes a solid player and our defense did a good job on her on this time, Dunn said. Greenwood improved to 11-1 and 2-1 in the 14th District. Bowling Green fell to 9-4 and 2-1 in the district.
