Five people have been indicted in a sprawling case involving allegations of fentanyl trafficking, with a fatal overdose being tied to one of the suspects.<\/p>\n
Brayan Torres, 19, was charged last week by the grand jury in Warren County with second-degree manslaughter, 34 counts of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (fentanyl), first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor and engaging in organized crime.<\/p>\n
Torres is accused of wantonly causing the death of Acacia Rose Martinez, 18, of Bowling Green, on Jan. 21 from a suspected overdose.<\/p>\n
According to prior court testimony, Martinez and Torres spent a substantial amount of time together on Jan. 21 before she traveled home.<\/p>\n
Torres was arrested Jan. 31 by the Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force, which developed intelligence that allegedly implicated Torres in the use and distribution of fentanyl and conducted surveillance on Torres’ residence just before his arrest.<\/p>\n
At the time of his arrest, Torres was charged with reckless homicide and a single count of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, before the grand jury added several additional counts.<\/p>\n
Torres was arraigned Monday in Warren Circuit Court, where a public defender was appointed to represent him and a not guilty plea entered on his behalf.<\/p>\n
Warren Circuit Judge Chris Cohron set a pretrial conference in Torres’ case for May 27.<\/p>\n
Torres is being held in Warren County Regional Jail under a $150,000 cash bond.<\/p>\n
In addition to Torres, drug task force agents arrested Reath David Khan, 23, and Mut David Khan, 28, as part of the initial investigation.<\/p>\n
The grand jury indicted Reath Khan on 15 counts of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (fentanyl), receiving stolen property (firearm), first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (fentanyl, firearm enhanced), possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and engaging in organized crime.<\/p>\n
When police arrested Torres, he was getting into a vehicle driven by Reath Khan.<\/p>\n
WCDTF Detective Kyle Laing testified at a February preliminary hearing in Warren District Court that a package containing about 2.4 grams of suspected fentanyl was recovered, along with a handgun, from the vehicle.<\/p>\n
Police also recovered a hotel room key card that led detectives to Khan’s brother, Mut Khan.<\/p>\n
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the hotel room where Mut Khan was found, and seized about 8.5 grams of suspected fentanyl, 2.4 grams of suspected crack cocaine, about a pound of marijuana and more than $1,000, Laing testified in February.<\/p>\n
Mut Khan was indicted last week on charges of engaging in organized crime, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (fentanyl), first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), trafficking in marijuana, intimidating a participant in the legal process and possession of drug paraphernalia.<\/p>\n
Two people who were not arrested Jan. 31 by task force detectives have also been indicted as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n
Jonathan Shizirungo, 27, of Bowling Green, was formally charged with 10 counts of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (fentanyl) and engaging in organized crime, while Kayyanah Shakia Smith, 20, of Bowling Green, has been indicted on five counts of first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (fentanyl) and engaging in organized crime.<\/p>\n
Smith was arraigned Monday in Warren Circuit Court and has a pretrial conference set for May 27.<\/p>\n
The organized crime charge against each of the five co-defendants alleges that they conspired throughout the month of January in Bowling Green to illegally sell drugs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
